They have been chosen as they are among the best known in the county of Devon and most have their homes here.
\r\nAddress books tend to be well used and have a long life. Beneath granite tors, rising starkly from snowy slopes, solitary farms show flickering candlelight from frosted windows. While climate change brings much less snow to the high moor these days, the picture painted above is still evident when winter’s hand does descend on the moor, and in this book Adrian Oakes set out to capture the essence of Dartmoor during this time of year.
\r\n
\r\nAs luck would have it, while photographs were being taken for this book, Dartmoor experienced one of the most severe winters for more than three decades. Early in February several feet of snow fell in a matter of hours, blanketing the moor, filling the deep lanes, and effectively cutting off communities and farms from the outside world. With falling trees bringing down powerlines, once again many homes were returned to a world of candlelight amid the eerie silence of a snowbound landscape.
\r\n
\r\nThe following days dawned clear and bright bringing perfect conditions for winter photographs, though getting them required considerable effort on the photographer’s part. Enjoy these wonderful pictures of the moorland in winter; a superb evocation of the season that many would say is Dartmoor’s best.
\r\n
\r\nAdrian Oakes is a landscape and contemporary photographer based in Devon. Approx 160 Images of Dartmoor throughout the seasons.
\r\n
\r\nDartmoor represents to most people a place of restful beauty, a landscape in which it is easy to feel at one with the natural world. It is this sense of wilderness that first draws people to the moor, and its diversity which keeps them coming back. And it is a fact that the more one gets to know Dartmoor, the more there is to know.
\r\n
\r\nDartmoor became a National Park in 1951. It covers an area of 369 square miles and is home and workplace for over 30 000 people, as well as a favoured recreational focus for visitors.Towering granite tors dominate the landscape and are its most prominent and well-known feature. Much of the current landscape is the end result of habitation and farming dating back to prehistoric times. Plentiful evidence of this early occupation is to be found in standing stones, cairns, burial chambers, hut circles and stone rows. In more recent times quarrying and mining has left scars upon the landscape, while farms, hamlets and larger settlements have grown into desirable places to live, overturning many of the traditional occupations of country life in the past hundred years.
\r\n
\r\nDartmoor is not huge but is easily large enough to get lost in.Those who know the moor well will delight in the wonderful photographs this book contains, appreciating the endless patience of the photographer who has waited for that precise shot that encapsulates a particular fall of sunlight, the shadow across a hillside, and the bright flash of water tumbling in a stream. photos[5992140] = new photo(5992140,'271427','','section443649','devonwjlge.gif',300,283,'Devon Walkers Journal. New for 2010 ',0, 0,'The new Devon Walkers Journal by Halsgrove.
\r\n
\r\nThe cover image and various images inside supplied by me.
\r\n
\r\nWalking is Britain\'s most popular outdoor recreation and more than half the population of Britain is recorded as walking for pleasure at least once a month. While some of us walk just to exercise the dog, many are more serious walkers, recognising not only the physical benefits of a bracing mile or two but also the ‘rise in spirits’ which come from getting outdoors and away from the concerns of daily life. Families, groups of friends and organised parties of ramblers, increasingly are finding the pleasures of planning and taking walks, at whatever distance, an inexpensive and highly rewarding activity.
\r\n
\r\nIn taking an exhilarating walk we need not rely on the car or public transport, for in England we are fortunate to live in a country in which public footpaths and rights of way have for centuries provided freedom of access. More recent legislation has increased this ‘right to roam’, opening up areas beyond the confines of designated routes. Local authorities, in part impelled by interested rambling organisations, but also through recognising the overall social benefits of walking, have invested in keeping footpaths in good order, in waymarking and providing useful local walks leaflets. The market in walking books appears to know no bounds.
\r\n
\r\nThis Walker’s Journal provides an opportunity for the dedicated walker to keep a record of where and when they walked, and with whom. That it carries a title relating to a particular county is no reason why the walker should not venture farther afield, simply that the journal represents their ‘home patch’ or a region close to their heart. The photographs, as well as adding to the attractive design of the journal are included as an inspiration to explore the superb countryside on our doorstep.
\r\n
\r\nOur aim has been to make the use of the Walker’s Journal as flexible as possible, allowing the user to decide how best to create a record of their walking journeys. For some, a single journal may last a year or more, perhaps for others this journal may be one that builds into a number of volumes. As with a diary, it will act as an aide-memoire, but more than that we hope it will give hours of pleasure when, on re-reading in future years, it will help recall past walks long forgotten, and warm memories of good friends and companionship.
\r\n
\r\nPrice includes First Class post within the UK','','','',15.00,'','',5,' photo_5992140.html');
